Australia asks for meeting with Roblox after grooming, content complaints

Australia's eSafety Commissioner will test Roblox's child-safety measures amid ongoing reports of harmful content and grooming, with fines up to A$49.5 million possible for non-compliance.

  • On Monday, Communications Minister Anika Wells requested an urgent meeting with Roblox over reports children faced sexually explicit and suicidal content on its platform with more than 150 million daily users.
  • The eSafety Commissioner will pressure-test nine safety commitments Roblox made in 2025, including making under-16 accounts private by default and blocking adult contact without parental consent after extensive 2024-2025 engagement.
  • Since last November, Roblox has implemented age verification controls rolled out globally with facial-recognition age checks, filters blocking personal info sharing, and no user-to-user image or video sharing.
  • The government has asked the Classification Board to review Roblox's 2018 PG rating, and eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said deficiencies could trigger penalties of up to $49.5 million.
  • New codes taking effect on March 9 will require gaming services to prohibit grooming, sexual extortion and non-consensual image sharing, highlighting the need for a digital duty of care.
