Austin Abrams tries to 'survive the unthinkable' in 'Whalefall'

  • On Wednesday, 20th Century Studios released the official trailer for the aquatic survival thriller Whalefall, starring Austin Abrams and Josh Brolin. Directed by Brian Duffield, the film arrives in theaters on Oct 16.
  • Based on Daniel Kraus' 2023 novel, the film follows Jay Gardiner, played by Abrams, as he dives off the California coast searching for his late father's remains, only to be swallowed by a massive eighty-foot, sixty-ton sperm whale.
  • Trapped inside the whale with only one hour of oxygen, Jay must "survive the unthinkable" and rely on his father's hard-earned lessons to escape. An official synopsis describes the character's fight against time and biology.
  • Filming occurred inside a whale set in Studio City, California, according to Director Duffield. The project was excluded from Disney's D23 Friday Showcase, as the studio reportedly aimed to avoid traumatizing younger fans.
  • Joining the production are Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy, and Emily Rudd. Duffield recently noted the team worked closely with whale experts to ensure accuracy despite taking creative liberties for filmmaking.
