Benin's failed coup shines a light on the army's discontent
On December 7, the mutineers highlighted deep-seated problems within the institution, issues that soldiers had raised for years. The fighting during this failed coup appeared to have been more intense and deadly than the official tally released by Benin's authorities.
According to the Beninese intelligence services, the leader of the putschists who tried to overthrow President Patrice Talon on 7 December first fled through Togo, before leaving Lomé for another country in the region where they thought they had located it.
FACT: Following the attempted coup in Benin, a Facebook page called "Côte d'Ivoire Ma Patrie" claims that the Ivorian government demanded "the immediate release of President Patrice Talon, whose safety and physical integrity must be guaranteed unconditionally; calls on the new military authorities to demonstrate…"
