Cristian Romero to Atletico Madrid: Tottenham Agree €40m Deal
The defender will sign a five-year contract after Atlético Madrid agreed a €40 million deal with Tottenham and added a 15% sell-on clause.
Atletico Madrid agreed to sign Argentine defender Cristian 'Cuti' Romero from Tottenham Hotspur for €40 million, with the 28-year-old signing a five-year contract to end his five-season tenure in England.
Before joining the Premier League, Romero played for Belgrano, Genoa, and Atalanta; he established himself as a key defender at Tottenham, making 124 appearances and captaining the team to 2025 Europa League glory.
According to local reports, Tottenham inserted a 15% sell-on clause into the deal; the World Cup winner, who won in Qatar in 2022, had previously expressed his desire to play in Spain.
Under manager Diego Simeone, an icon of Argentine football, Romero embarks on a new chapter; he faces the challenge of adapting quickly to Spanish football and Atletico's tactical demands.
Romero joins other Argentine World Cup stars relocating this summer, including Nahuel Molina to Roma, Gerónimo Rulli to Manchester City, Valentín Barco to Chelsea, and Thiago Almada to River Plate.
