Atlanta’s new giant pandas will make their public debut after a 2-year absence

The $6 million habitat adds expanded dayrooms, climbing structures and a Panda Cam as the zoo renews its panda program with China.

  • On Friday, giant pandas Ping Ping and Fu Shuang make their public debut at Zoo Atlanta inside the newly renovated Blank Panda Grove, ending a two-year absence for the species.
  • The enclosure remained empty for two years after four previous pandas returned to China, ending a 25-year partnership; Zoo Atlanta is now one of three United States facilities housing giant pandas.
  • A $6 million renovation funded by the Woodruff Foundation updated the habitat, while the 6-year-old pandas arrived from China in September after a 16-hour journey for a 10-year loan.
  • To help guests distinguish the pair, the Panda Care Team noted, "Ping Ping is noticeably larger than Fu Shuang and has a Y down the bridge of his nose," while Fu Shuang has a rounder face.
  • Zoo Atlanta President and CEO Raymond B. King leads an opening ceremony at 8 a.m. today inside the Blank Panda Grove, celebrating the pandas as symbols of peace and harmony.
