Atlanta region added nearly 54,000 residents in past year
The region’s growth was driven by in-migration and kept metro Atlanta above historical averages, ARC Chair Andre Dickens said.
The Atlanta Regional Commission reported the 11-county Atlanta region added 53,690 residents between April 2025 and April 2026, bringing total population to 5,339,164.
While the region grew at a 1.0% rate, this represents a slight decrease from last year's 1.2%, reflecting a nationwide trend of slowing population growth.
Fulton County led regional growth at 1.9%, followed by Forsyth at 1.5%, while the City of Atlanta added nearly 7,000 residents driven by multifamily developments in Midtown and along the Atlanta Beltline.
The City of Atlanta issued 5,622 building permits, leading the region, while ARC Board Chair Andre Dickens, who also serves as Mayor, said the region "continues to grow and thrive."
Although all 11 counties added population, low housing supply and elevated prices place a brake on domestic migration, with current permit activity remaining below the 1980-2025 annual average of 33,150.
