Dozens feared dead after two high-speed trains collide in Spain
On Wednesday, October 28, 2026, a Renfe AVE high-speed train rear-ended an Iryo service near Urda in Toledo province, derailing two carriages and prompting rail operator Adif to suspend the Madrid-Andalusia line.
Rail operator Adif stated the rear-end collision occurred at kilometre point 118 on the Madrid-Seville route, with preliminary reports indicating one train struck a stationary service from behind.
Regional spokeswoman Esther Padilla confirmed at least 10 deaths but cautioned "that number will surely rise" as emergency crews deployed three helicopters and two mobile intensive care units to the scene.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and opposition leader Alberto Nunez Feijoo cancelled Wednesday engagements following the tragedy, while authorities in Urda prepared a sports hall to accommodate survivors and injured passengers.
This collision echoes the January 2026 Adamuz crash that killed 46 people, intensifying concerns about Spain's high-speed rail safety. Renfe drivers remain scheduled for a 24-hour nationwide strike on Thursday, October 29 over unresolved safety issues.
Perhaps, because of the mourning, the Ibero-American Summit in Madrid, President Pedro Sánchez and King Felipe VI should cancel or postpone it. Better times will come, says a tango from 1934.
