At least 20 people killed in Sudan after a suspected drone strike hits a prison
A suspected drone strike hit the main prison in Obeid, Sudan, on Saturday, killing at least 20 inmates and wounding fifty others.
The attack occurred amid ongoing civil war triggered by clashes between Sudan's military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces that began in April 2023.
Information Minister Khalid Aleiser accused the Rapid Support Forces of launching the strike, part of their escalation of drone attacks on military-held areas across Sudan.
The conflict has resulted in more than 24,000 deaths and forced around 13 million people to flee their homes, with the United Nations and human rights organizations documenting widespread abuses such as systematic sexual violence and targeted killings based on ethnicity.
This strike underscores the persistent violence fueling Sudan's war, suggesting ongoing instability and worsening humanitarian conditions in affected regions.
At least 21 people have died and 47 have been injured in central Sudan due to an attack attributed to the paramilitaries Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on a prison in the state of North Kordofan.
