13 People Ill From Salmonella as Spanish Eggs Are Pulled in ‘Serious’ EU Alert
Authorities withdrew the batch after lab tests identified Salmonella Enteritidis and the EU classified the outbreak as serious.
- On Thursday, Spanish officials reported that at least 13 people fell ill with salmonella after eating Spanish-produced eggs, with the contaminated batch also distributed in Portugal before withdrawal.
- Laboratory results dated Wednesday September 23 identified Salmonella Enteritidis, a strain closely linked to eggs and poultry, as the pathogen. Laying hens can carry the bacteria via feed or water and contaminate eggs during laying.
- Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition has not released the brand, sale locations, or quantity of contaminated eggs. The outbreak does not appear on the agency's public food alerts page.
- The European Union's Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed classified the incident as serious, the highest risk level. This marks Spain's second egg-linked outbreak since August, following 29 illnesses in Eibar.
- Castilla health services advise against washing eggs, as moisture helps bacteria penetrate shells. Sauces, custards, and cakes should be refrigerated and consumed within 24 hours, since Salmonellosis symptoms typically emerge within 72 hours of exposure.
