Assam Flood Toll Rises to 68 as State Shifts Focus to Relief, Rehabilitation
The BJP asked party workers to raise relief money as Assam’s flood death toll rose to 66 and 7.5 lakh people remained affected.
- On Monday, officials reported the death toll from Assam's floods reached 68, with over 5.24 lakh people affected across five districts. Charaideo remains the worst-hit area, with nearly 1.9 lakh people reeling under water.
- Eastern districts bordering Nagaland, including Charaideo, Jorhat, and Sivasagar, host 94% of affected people. Currently, 354 relief camps and aid centers support 37,724 displaced residents across the region.
- Seeking relief funds, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma advised Bharatiya Janata Party workers to hand over donations up to ₹2,000 to local MLAs. Mohammed Badruddin Ajmal also announced a personal contribution of ₹2 crore.
- To support farmers, Agriculture Minister Pijush Hazarika announced free paddy seeds and seedlings for Charaideo, Jorhat, and Sivasagar. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal visited affected areas Saturday, reaffirming the Centre's commitment to coordinating assistance with the state.
- With power restoration ongoing, Power Department teams are working across Sivasagar, Jorhat, Charaideo, Dhubri, and Bongaigaon. Chief Minister Sarma stated the government remains "committed to restoring essential services at the earliest and ensuring every affected community returns to normalcy.
