Why Assam Has Decided to Restrict Aadhaar Enrolment for People Above 18 Years
Adults in Assam will face new Aadhaar limits as the state cites illegal immigration concerns, while children under 18 can still enroll.
On Saturday, June 13, 2026, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the Cabinet decided to halt Aadhaar card issuance for adults to prevent illegal immigrants from acquiring identity documents.
Remarking that issuance reached a saturation point, Sarma noted some districts crossed the 100% mark and emphasized the need to verify applicants to ensure no "illegal Bangladeshis" obtain the document.
Aadhaar enrolment for children under 18 continues unchanged, though Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Tea Garden community members can obtain cards only until March 31, 2027.
In exceptional cases, applicants must route requests through the district commissioner, who submits a proposal to the State Government for approval to determine eligibility.
Separately, the Cabinet approved developing a Guwahati Satellite City within the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority jurisdiction to support future growth and ease urban infrastructure pressures.
