ASIO Chief Pushes Review of Australia’s Terror Threat System
Mike Burgess said the current four-tier system understates politically motivated violence and that ASIO has foiled 31 major plots since 2014.
On Thursday, ASIO director-general Mike Burgess announced plans to overhaul Australia's terrorism threat level system, warning the current 'probable' status fails to reflect the complexity of the 'degrading security environment' facing society.
Burgess, who is in talks with Home Affairs Department Secretary Stephanie Foster, argued the decade-old system was not designed for modern threats, noting that acts of politically motivated violence are becoming increasingly likely.
The current 'probable' level signifies a greater than 50 per cent chance of an onshore attack within 12 months, though Burgess told ABC Radio on Thursday that this metric 'does not tell the full story.'
Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke confirmed the government is considering adding more gradations to the four-tier system, stating 'The thing that matters is making sure that the Australian people...get the best possible information.'
Surging foreign interference and espionage demand attention, Burgess noted, adding that 'countering terrorism remained a priority' even as intelligence agencies manage the aftermath of the Bondi terror attack.
