Global Market Today: Asian Stocks Recover as Chips Rebound, Oil Dips
Chipmakers led gains as investors watched Middle East mediation and awaited Alphabet and Intel earnings.
Asian stocks rose on Tuesday, led by chipmakers Samsung Electronics and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, recording their first regional gain in four days as oil prices retreated following Middle East mediation efforts.
The United States and Iran exchanged strikes for a 10th straight day, yet mediators sought to revive a ceasefire as oil prices surged nearly 6 percent over the previous two days before retreating.
China mounted a broad stabilization effort on the tech-heavy STAR 50 Index, which jumped 11 per cent on Tuesday after state-backed insurers pledged to boost equity investments in the $15 trillion market.
Alphabet, Tesla Inc., and Intel will deliver earnings this week, with reports expected to test whether AI revenues and cash flow justify massive infrastructure investments amid sky-high profit expectations.
HSBC chief Asia economist Fred Neumann cautioned that "while demand for AI hardware remains red hot, investor expectations for earnings have become increasingly lofty," rendering the sector vulnerable to marginal projection adjustments.
