Asbestos is banned in Canada. Why is it in our drinking water?

For more than a decade, Julian Branch has worried about the asbestos coming out of his tap, and with good reason: where he lives, in south Regina, about 95 per cent of the pipes are made from asbestos cement. It’s well known that asbestos is carcinogenic; inhaling fibres can cause lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma, so asbestos use is now heavily restricted, if not outright banned, in many places.
