Canada Boosts AI Safety With $350 Million in New Funding
Canada and Germany are backing safe AI development with up to $300 million as Ottawa adds $50 million for its AI Safety Institute.
- On Wednesday, Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Solomon announced a $300 million investment from Canada and Germany into Yoshua Bengio's LawZero non-profit, supporting development of 'Scientist AI' designed to be trustworthy and safe.
- Prime Minister Mark Carney separately called for an international 'technology stability' body modeled on the Financial Stability Board, as Solomon described the growing appetite for regulation as a 'good thing.'
- Cohere CEO Aidan Gomez warned against 'regulatory capture' by Silicon Valley firms, while OpenAI CEO Sam Altman agreed that 'we need to pace the frontier.' Both positions emerged Wednesday during a Montreal conference panel.
- Von der Leyen proposed a multi-stakeholder approach to tackle AI risks, inviting frontier labs to discuss industry efforts while seeking coordination with partners including Canada and the United Kingdom on model evaluation and security.
- President Donald Trump rejected these regulatory efforts, dismissing warnings about AI's existential risks as a 'Hoax' in recent online posts and claiming the technology will not 'take over, consume, and destroy the World.
