World Risks Year of Severe Fires Fueled by Climate Change
Researchers say 163 million hectares have burned since January, 20% above the previous record, as climate change and El Niño raise fire risk.
Wildfires have scorched 50% more area than the average for this time of year, with the current area burnt globally more than 20% higher than the previous record set since 2012.
As much as 85 million hectares of land have burned in Africa this year, 23% more than the previous record, with Asia also seeing unprecedented fire damage.
Scientists warn that wildfire risks could worsen later this year if a strong El Niño develops, potentially resulting in unprecedented weather extremes due to the combined effect of climate change and El Niño.
