As minimum wage increases to almost £25,000 workers urged to check their paypackets
The UK government boosts enforcement and raises wages by 4.1%, benefiting 2.4 million low-paid workers with annual earnings nearing £25,000.
- The National Living Wage increase to £12.71 will take effect from April 2026, boosting gross pay by £900 and benefiting around 2.4 million low-paid workers, the UK government said.
- The government frames the rise within its Plan to Make Work Pay, the biggest upgrade to workers' rights benefiting around 15 million workers and establishing the Fair Work Agency in April 2026.
- Taken together, the changes will benefit a total of 2.7 million young and older workers, with the National Minimum Wage for 16 to 17-year-olds and apprentices rising to £8 an hour, and the National Minimum Wage for 18 to 20-year-olds increasing to £10.85 an hour.
- Enforcement activity has already returned pay to around 42,000 workers, including well-known high street brands, with employers fined totalling £10.2 million for breaking the rules.
- Employment Rights Minister Kate Dearden said, 'This government is taking direct action to ensure workers get every penny they’ve earned.' Workers are advised to report suspected underpayment to HMRC or contact Acas for free advice.
