As Congo Grapples with Ebola, Volunteers Cook Meals to Support Patients
Volunteers for the United Nations food agency say meals are helping patients and health workers stay fed as cases climb past 280.
Arlette Basekawike, a volunteer for the United Nations food agency in Bunia, prepares meals for Ebola patients at the Evangelical Medical Center, helping them feel comfortable and maintain energy to accept medication.
The rare Bundibugyo virus, a species of Ebola confirmed in eastern Congo in May, continues to spread across the region's three eastern provinces. As of Tuesday, the World Health Organization confirmed 321 cases and 48 deaths.
On Sunday, volunteers served 120 meals through four health facilities, bringing the total to 404 since assistance began May 28. Nurse Esther Bao noted that rising patient numbers require program expansion.
Olivier Nkakudulu, head of the World Food Program in Ituri, warned that without more funding, aid agencies might struggle to prioritize every suspected case amid the region's acute food insecurity linked to ongoing conflict.
The outbreak has reached 22 health zones, while neighboring Uganda confirmed nine cases and one death, prompting Uganda to close its border with Congo and complicating virus management among a wary population.
