As Cocoa Prices Melt Down, Real Chocolate Is Making a Comeback
The company said rising cocoa affordability will let it restore original recipes after years of smaller bars and cocoa-free alternatives.
The Hershey Company announced that all Hershey's and Reese's products will return to their original recipes starting next year, following public criticism from Brad Reese, the founder's grandson, over ingredient changes.
Falling cocoa prices, which dropped 70% from their late 2024 peaks, made traditional chocolate cheaper for manufacturers to produce than the vegetable-fat alternatives used during the supply shortage.
Independent consultant Roger Bradshaw stated that other companies will likely follow suit, saying, "Absolutely it makes sense to switch back to real chocolate at current cocoa price levels."
New requirements in Brazil, including a law mandating at least 35% cocoa solids in dark chocolate, are influencing suppliers like Barry Callebaut, which serves Kit Kat and The Magnum Ice Cream Company.
Hershey plans to increase research and development funding by 25%, while experts estimate it will take 2.5 years for consumer demand to return to pre-volatility levels.
