Russia, Ukraine Resume Strikes as Truce Expires, One Dead: Authorities
Ukraine’s air force warned of dozens of incoming drones before debris hit a 20-storey residential building, officials said.
Russian forces resumed attacks on Kyiv overnight May 12, launching dozens of drones that struck a 20-storey residential building in the Obolon district, local officials reported.
The attack occurred hours after a U.S.-brokered ceasefire expired, an agreement President Donald Trump had arranged to accommodate Moscow's Victory Day parade following three days of relative calm.
Ahead of the strike, the Ukrainian Air Force warned of incoming drones; Kyiv City Military Administration head Tymur Tkachenko reported debris ignited a rooftop fire after explosions were heard at 3:35 a.m.
President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on May 11 that Ukraine will hold back 'long-range sanctions' strikes on Russian military targets if Moscow continues to avoid launching mass attacks.
Negotiations for peace have resumed as the U.S. seeks to broker another temporary ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia in exchange for sanctions relief for Moscow.
This is the first air raid alert on the Ukrainian capital since May 8.
