He was born on September 23, 1926 in North Carolina, although his career developed in Philadelphia.He played with all the greats of his time, from Miles Davis to Thelonious Monk.He fought against his addiction to drugs and alcohol and died at age 40, due to liver cancer.His music challenged the limits and led a revolution within jazz.
