Army general left classified maps on train, concussed after ‘overindulgence’ in alcohol: Inspector general report
Maj. Gen. Antonio Aguto left classified SECRET maps unattended on a train for over 24 hours and suffered a concussion after consuming nearly a liter of alcohol during a military dinner in Ukraine.
- Maj. Gen. Antonio Aguto Jr. left classified maps on a Department of State‑chartered train, which remained unattended for about 24 hours before being recovered by U.S. embassy staff.
- Because the maps were oversized, the inspector general found they were hand-carried in an oversized cylindrical map tube and control was assigned to staff rather than a courier, violating the courier requirement.
- During a nearly six-hour dinner, Aguto drank two 500 ml bottles of chacha, fell at least three times, and medical exams confirmed a moderate-to-severe concussion.
- The inspector general recommended the Secretary of the Army refer the documents issue to U.S. European Command security authorities and take appropriate action; Aguto took responsibility and left command in August 2024.
- The investigation, opened after anonymous complaints, found that the IG reviewed incidents from April and May 2024, during a period of $50.6 billion in U.S. security aid to Ukraine.
