Arizona Voters Projected to Pass Prop. 318 on Transgender Athlete Restrictions, AP Reports
The measure won by more than 200,000 votes and expands bathroom and sports restrictions to private athletic groups, opponents said.
Arizona voters approved the "Protect Girls Sports in Arizona Act" early Wednesday, with 59% supporting Proposition 318 and 41% opposing the measure.
To bypass Governor Katie Hobbs, Republicans placed the measure on the ballot; she has consistently vetoed similar legislation targeting LGBTQ Arizonans.
Proposition 318 expands a 2022 law signed by Governor Doug Ducey to include private athletic organizations; it faced legal challenges before a Supreme Court ruling enabled enactment this year.
Darrell Hill, ACLU policy director, slammed the measure as "unnecessary," warning it could open doors to discrimination against transgender people in bathrooms and facilities unrelated to sports.
Arizona joins twenty-nine states currently banning transgender athletes from sports participation, according to the Movement Advancement Project, a Colorado think tank focused on LGBTQ issues.
