CBS News Projects Katie Hobbs Reelection in Arizona Governor’s Race
Hobbs won a second term after a close race against Trump-backed Rep. Andy Biggs, who promoted conspiracy theories about the 2020 election.
On Tuesday, Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs won reelection, defeating Republican opponent Rep. Andy Biggs, as CBS News projected the victory securing her another four years in office.
Biggs, a former chair of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, challenged the 2020 election results on Jan. 6, 2021, and faced scrutiny for efforts to overturn the vote.
Republicans dubbed Hobbs the "veto queen" after she issued over 100 vetoes in her first year alone; her campaign faced allegations regarding preferential treatment for a donor, which she denied.
Hobbs' running mate, former Mesa Mayor John Giles, becomes Arizona's first lieutenant governor, a newly created position replacing the secretary of state as the designated successor.
Although Arizona has shifted toward a purple status, Hobbs remains one of the few Democratic governors leading a state that President Donald Trump won in 2024.
