Arizona Auto Thefts Decrease 6.6% in 2023
Arizona reported 20,255 auto-theft incidents in 2023, and 16,733 vehicles were recovered, according to the Arizona Automobile Theft Authority.
Arizona auto thefts decreased by 6.6% in 2023, with 20,255 incidents reported, according to the Arizona Automobile Theft Authority .
While Arizona saw a decline, a Council on Criminal Justice report finds auto theft increased by 29% nationally in 2023, with theft rates in 34 American cities 105% higher than in 2019.
Of the 20,255 vehicles reported stolen, 16,733 were recovered, yielding an 83% recovery rate, though Kia and Hyundai models lacking new safety features remain theft targets.
Despite the lower theft rate, Insurify data journalist Cassie Sheets says Arizona drivers may not see lower insurance premiums, as average annual full coverage costs $1,941.
Rising repair costs may offset theft declines, so ATA officials urge residents to continue practicing smart safety habits such as parking in well-lit areas and locking vehicle doors.
