On July 18, 1936, when she learned of the fascist coup d’état, Antonia Mercé called her family in Madrid to learn more about the situation. The dancer, who was at her house in Bayona, spent a delicate period of health. The news that came from Spain added to her great uneasiness and, that night, at the age of 46, passed away.
