A summer cyclospora outbreak traced to Taylor Farms' imported Mexican iceberg lettuce sickened at least 6,358 people, causing two deaths, renewing concerns regarding the sufficiency of current food safety oversight tools.
After incurring over $21,000 in costs from spoiled produce, Keystone Cue owner Joe Gera severed ties with Taylor Farms on Tuesday. He urged other operators to seek alternative suppliers, citing the difficulty of avoiding industrial distributors.
Taylor Farms temporarily suspended production in its Mexico facility and commissioned independent reviews in response to the incidents. The firm maintains it invests more than $200 million annually into food safety protocols and cooperates with regulators.
Agricultural economy expert Luis Ribiera warned that increased import reliance, coupled with nearly 13% fewer foreign FDA inspections in 2025, exacerbates food safety vulnerabilities as Mexico accounts for more than 20% of United States food imports.
