Apple Sports is getting a more visual World Cup experience with live player formations
The free iPhone app adds live formations, lineups and team tracking as Apple expands availability to 90 new markets.
- Apple expanded Apple Sports to 90 new markets today, bringing total availability to over 170 countries ahead of the FIFA World Cup next month. The update introduces a tournament hub for tracking matches and team progression.
- New interface features include a scrollable tournament bracket and visual lineup formations for tactical insight. Oliver Schusser, Apple's vice president of Music, Sports, Apple TV, and Beats, said the app is "designed to be fast and simple."
- In the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, the app links directly to Apple News for editorial coverage. Fans can also tap to find live match broadcasts on connected streaming services.
- The free application provides real-time scores and statistics across matches. Unlike Apple TV's coverage of MLS, Friday Night Baseball, or Formula, the app itself is not broadcasting the World Cup games.
- With the FIFA World Cup kicking off next month, this expansion positions Apple Sports as a central hub for international fans. "The World Cup unites fans across the globe," Oliver Schusser said, underscoring the strategic timing.
