Apple Leads Smartphone Market Even as Overall Shipments Decline ...
Counterpoint Research said Apple reached a 21% share and 5% growth as memory shortages and weaker demand cut global shipments 6%.
- On Friday, Apple led global smartphone shipments in Q1 2026, growing 5% year-on-year and capturing a 21% market share for the first time in a first quarter, Counterpoint Research said.
- Global smartphone shipments fell 6% as shortages of DRAM and NAND memory intensified, with suppliers prioritizing AI data centers over consumer electronics instead.
- Samsung followed with a 20% share and a 6% decline, while Xiaomi held 13%, OPPO 11%, and vivo 8%, with other OEMs combining for a 28% share and a 10% decline.
- To address weaker demand, OEMs are passing "increased Bills of Material costs directly to the consumer," while IPhone-maker Apple posted a 23% surge in China smartphone sales during the first nine weeks of 2026.
- Counterpoint Research said the "outlook for 2026 remains weak, as the memory crunch may last until late 2027," with OEMs expected to prioritize value, configuration updates, and refurbished devices.
