Animal shelter in Grand Forks overrun with cats, urges adoption
The volunteer-run shelter says more cats keep arriving as it seeks adopters, fosters and spay-neuter help to clear space for the colony rescue.
The Boundary Helping Hands Feline Rescue Society is caring for 107 cats and kittens while operating over capacity in Grand Forks, including a rescue of a large colony from Okanagan Falls.
Operations manager Kimberly Feeny explains that unfixed cats breed rapidly; they gestate for two months and can become pregnant again while nursing at three weeks old.
Rescuers have taken approximately 25 cats from the Okanagan Falls property after the owner entered a care home, with at least 20 more remaining that require months of medical treatment.
Feeny is urging residents to open their homes as adopters or fosters, while the shelter relies on just 50 volunteer caretakers and offers financial assistance with spay and neuter costs.
Anyone wishing to volunteer or adopt can reach out through the website or Facebook, as the shelter coordinates with Penticton Animal Hospital to provide necessary medical care and intake support.
