Angry Libyan Football Fans Set GNU Building on Fire During Protest
Fans protested a referee’s penalty call after the match stopped in the 87th minute, and firefighters later brought the blaze under control.
On Thursday, Al-ittihad football fans in Tripoli set fire to the headquarters of Libya's Government of National Unity after a referee denied them a penalty kick in a match against Swehly.
The match took place in Tarhouna, around 65 km from Tripoli, and officials stopped play in the 87th minute after Al-ittihad protested the penalty decision; Swehly later claimed its team was "crowned with victory."
Two eyewitnesses reported Al-ittihad fans marched to the GNU building and used fireworks "to express their anger," causing the facade to catch fire; social media pictures showed guards injured at the stadium.
GNU forces deployed around the building and firefighters brought the fire under control by midnight, though the government offered no immediate response to requests for comment regarding the incident.
Libya has experienced little stability since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising ousted Muammar Gaddafi, and the internationally recognized GNU is currently headed by Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah, who came to power in 2021.
