Extinct shark species from the time of the dinosaurs have been discovered by Egyptian paleontologists in the Western Desert. Among the specimens found were species that experts had never seen before in Egypt. The find confirmed that today's inhospitable desert was home to a sea full of life tens of millions of years ago.
The western Egyptian desert has just delivered a new clue to its marine past. On the Abu-Tartur plateau, west of the Nile Valley, paleontologists have extracted fourteen fossil teeth of sharks. The team led by Tarek Yassin, of the University of Cairo, described them in the journal Cretaceous Research.
