The Asteroid that May Be Three Worlds

Summary by Phys.org
What shape is an asteroid? For (44) Nysa, the honest answer until now has been that nobody knew. It is one of the brightest and largest E-type asteroids in the main belt, a class with a surface rich in enstatite, and its oddness has made it a favorite target for well over a hundred years. Successive observations hinted that it was elongated, perhaps even two lumps stuck together, but the picture stayed frustratingly blurred.

What are the properties of this unique celestial body? An international team of astronomers has discovered the first asteroid with a unique triple shape in the solar system. 44 Nysa consists of three interconnected particles and has a small satellite. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing a NASA study published on the arXiv preprint server. 44 Nysa was discovered in the 19th century and was long considered an ordinary point of light. Using ul…

Scientists have taken a closer look at an asteroid known as 44 Nysa, located in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. The most detailed observations to date have revealed distinct structures dividing it into three parts and a small companion orbiting it. The article, "Astronomers Study an Asteroid with an Unusual Shape in the Solar System," comes from the website Everything That Matters.

Asteroid 44 Nysa has become the center of scientific attention after the revelation of its unusual trilobed structure and the discovery of a small moon. We explain the reasons behind this major astronomical milestone observed from Chile. In the main asteroid belt, located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, orbits a unique celestial body that was discovered in the mid-19th century: 44 Nysa. For more than 160 years, asteroid 44 Nysa was known…
