El Nino Likely to Develop by May 2026, Says World Meteorological Organization
The World Meteorological Organization predicts an El Nino event likely developing by mid-2026, possibly as early as May to July, with early signals suggesting it could be strong.
El Nino causes warmer sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific, affecting global temperature and rainfall patterns, including increased rain in some regions and drought in others.
The appearance of an episode of the El Nino phenomenon is "more and more likely" since mid-2026, with effects on global temperatures and precipitation, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) announced on Friday.
