On the morning of July 14, 2025, at 7:13 am local time, a 5.5 magnitude earthquake occurred close to the southeastern shore of Spain, impacting over 50 towns including regions such as Almeria and the Costa del Sol.
The quake’s unusually shallow depth of about 2 km intensified its effects close to the epicenter, causing stronger shaking than deeper quakes of similar magnitude.
Buildings sustained damage in multiple locations, including the collapse of the airport ceiling in Almeria and harm to a car dealership in Huercal de Almeria, though no injuries have been reported.
A tourist described waking up as her home trembled briefly, while Google's automatic earthquake alert system notified nearby Android users prior to the quake.
