In a statement released by Çatak Municipality, it was reported that avalanches have occurred at 6 locations in the district so far, and citizens were asked to heed the warnings and stay away from risky areas due to the continuing risk of avalanches.
The Çatak Municipality in Van has issued a statement regarding the avalanche disasters in the region. According to the statement, six different avalanches occurred in Çatak following heavy snowfall. One person lost their life in the avalanches, approximately 20 houses were evacuated due to the risk, and the Van-Çatak highway was closed to traffic.
The avalanche disasters in Çatak district of Van and Ardanuç district of Artvin have plunged Turkey into mourning. In Van, 61-year-old Gülnaz Bitik, who was trapped under the avalanche, died in the hospital; while in Artvin, the bodies of two more shepherds who were stranded on a plateau at an altitude of 2,300 meters were recovered. Rescue efforts continue in both regions.
In Çatak district of Van, one person is reported missing following an avalanche, and 22 houses have been evacuated. Numerous teams were dispatched to the area upon notification, and A Haber reporter Yüksel Akalan provided details from the scene. Meanwhile, a woman rescued from under the avalanche died in the hospital. Additionally, the bodies of two of the three shepherds who were trapped in yesterday's avalanche in Artvin have been recovered.
