Google Signs 20-Year PPA with AEP for 702MW Wyoming Fuel Cell Project
The 702-megawatt project would use Bloom Energy fuel cells under a 20-year power deal as Google seeks more electricity for data centers and AI.
On Wednesday, American Electric Power announced a $4 billion investment in a 702-megawatt fuel cell project near Cheyenne, Wyoming, to supply Google under a 20-year power purchase agreement.
Technology companies are aggressively seeking new electricity sources to meet rising demand from data centers and artificial intelligence, as grid capacity constraints and slow infrastructure build-outs limit available power.
Cheyenne Fuel Cell, a joint venture 92% owned by AEP and 8% by Basalt Infrastructure Partners, will develop the facility using Bloom Energy fuel cell technology to provide on-demand electricity.
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026, with full operations expected by the end of 2028, and the facility will integrate carbon capture technology to deliver near-zero-emissions power.
Earlier this month, Google signed a similar deal with Black Hills Corp to power its Cheyenne data center, while AEP expanded capacity agreements with cloud firms Oracle and Nebuis to meet growing infrastructure demands.
