AMERICAN DREAM SHUTDOWN: Power Failure Shuts Down Rides at New Jersey’s American Dream Mall

A widespread power outage struck the American Dream Mall in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Monday afternoon, bringing amusement rides to an abrupt stop and forcing visitors to evacuate several attractions while crews worked to restore electricity. The outage began at approximately 3 p.m. Although the exact cause has not yet been determined, PSE&G said the disruption stemmed from “an issue with equipment internal to American Dream’s electrical system” and stated that crews are working to restore service. Mall officials said all guests were safely removed from the affected rides. Firefighters from the East Rutherford Fire Department assisted in evacuating several riders who had initially been stranded. One individual reportedly experienced difficulty breathing during the incident. In a statement, American Dream said, “Due to a localized power outage, some areas of the center are currently without power. We are working closely with the utility company to restore service as safely and quickly as possible.” Videos shared on social media showed a relatively orderly scene inside the mall, with shoppers walking through dimly lit corridors and visitors calmly waiting near the pool area after being instructed to exit the water. One witness said the largest crowd formed near customer service, where many people appeared to be seeking refunds. For many visitors, the unexpected outage turned an anticipated day of entertainment into a frustrating experience. One guest recalled that all the lights suddenly went out, followed by a “really loud noise,” after which the amusement rides immediately stopped operating. Tourist Tony Rodgers, who had traveled from Florida, expressed his disappointment, saying, “I go to the mall and there’s no power. Everything’s all blacked out. I’m like, there’s no way. I came all the way from Florida and today is the day there is no power.” Another visitor said, “We were waiting for a ride. We were about to get on when the power went out.” {Matzav.com}
