UK enters third heatwave with temperatures set to hit 35C
The amber alert runs from Wednesday to Sunday as temperatures are forecast to reach 34-35 degrees in parts of southern England.
The Met Office announced Monday, July 6, that the UK is entering its third heatwave of the year, issuing an amber heat health alert for six areas of England from 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 8, through 9 p.m. Sunday, July 12.
Temperatures are expected to climb into the low 30s Celsius across southern England, with highs of 33 degrees on Wednesday and 34 degrees on Thursday, while isolated locations could reach 35 degrees by the weekend.
The UK Health Security Agency warned that "significant impacts are likely across health and social care services due to the high temperatures," while deputy chief forecaster Steven Keates advised the public to "take the usual precautions with the heat and the sun."
National Rail Enquiries urged passengers to check for updates amid the heatwave, as the Met Office cautioned that some areas may experience "tropical nights" where temperatures do not fall below 20 degrees Celsius.
Heat will extend into Scotland and Northern Ireland with peak temperatures likely in the upper 20s Celsius; however, temperatures are expected to trend down slightly by early next week.
