Amazon to apply 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge on fulfillment

Amazon said the fee will partially recover higher fuel and logistics costs, and it will add about $0.17 per unit for U.S. sellers, the company said.

  • On Thursday, Amazon announced a 3.5% fuel and logistics-related surcharge on fulfillment fees for third-party sellers, effective April 17 in the U.S. and Canada.
  • The war in Iran, now in its fifth week, pushed Brent crude prices up more than 6% to $107.35 per barrel, forcing logistics providers to address elevated operating costs.
  • Amazon spokesperson Ashley Vanicek said the surcharge is "meaningfully lower" than levies from other carriers, adding that the company has "absorbed these increased costs so far."
  • With diesel prices climbing 46% to $5.5 per gallon, the Postal Service plans an 8% temporary package shipping price hike on April 26 to align transportation costs with market rates.
  • Experts are skeptical that the surcharge will be short-term, as Noah Wickham, VP at Amazon seller agency Amazon Guy, expects the company will "keep it regardless" even if fuel prices stabilize.
