Emmy Awards to Move to Prime Video in 2027 in 6-Year Deal Between Amazon and the Television Academy
The deal is worth more than $120 million and will make the annual ceremony free to stream on Prime Video each September.
On Tuesday, the Television Academy and Prime Video signed a six-year deal making the streaming service the exclusive home of the Primetime Emmys starting in 2027, ending a seven-decade run on broadcast networks.
Television Academy Chairman Cris Abrego sought to replace the rotating 'Wheel Deal' between ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC, which required annual restarts. Continuity over six years would allow the Academy to learn and build year to year.
Abrego emphasized that keeping the ceremony free to view was non-negotiable for the Academy. No Prime Video subscription will be required, ensuring global access to the event.
Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, aims to create a 'global event' attracting younger audiences through production innovation. Hopkins said Prime Video will promote Emmy nominees throughout the year to drive viewership.
This shift follows the Oscars' move to YouTube, addressing industry-wide viewership declines. The Emmys dropped from over 20 million viewers at its peak to around 7 million today.
