Amazon hopes to deliver 10,000 robotaxis annually with new factory, challenging Waymo
- Amazon-owned Zoox opened a 220,000-square-foot production facility in Hayward, California, to build purpose-designed robotaxis as of June 2025.
- Following more than a decade of development and substantial investment, Zoox established this factory to mass-produce electric, bidirectional robotaxis for its commercial ride-hailing service.
- Currently, the factory assembles about one robotaxi per day, using human and robotic workers, with a goal to reach three per hour next year and 10,000 vehicles annually.
- CEO Aicha Evans described the robotaxis as sophisticated mobile computers that deliver a distinctive passenger experience focused on comfort and durability, allowing each vehicle to complete multiple trips daily.
- Zoox plans a commercial rollout starting later this year in Las Vegas, its first market, followed by San Francisco, positioning itself as a competitor to Waymo’s established autonomous ride services.
