'Alpha Male' AI World Shuts Out Women: Computing Prof Hall
Professor Wendy Hall highlights that 50% of the population is excluded from AI development due to male dominance, causing gender bias in AI tools and investment disparities for women-led startups.
At the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, Hall said on Friday that the gender imbalance risks undermining inclusive technology pledges, with only one woman among many men.
A 2024 UNESCO study found large language models link women to domestic roles and men to careers, while Hall said biased data and male product teams embed stereotypes and let gender bias 'creep through'.
A summit photo showed 13 men and only one woman, highlighting gender imbalance in AI, while women-led startups face underinvestment and several countries banned Grok AI after deepfakes targeted women.
Hall warned this exclusion means 50 percent of the population is not included in AI talks, even as young women at the summit showed enthusiasm.
Decades‑long barriers remain, Hall said, recalling being told nearly five decades ago she couldn't get a university job because she was a woman, which explains why many women drop out of senior roles in tech.
