Brazil's Flávio Bolsonaro Leans Into Trump Connection as Scandal Shakes His Presidential Bid
Flávio Bolsonaro denies wrongdoing as allies say his candidacy remains intact after leaked messages showed about $12 million from Daniel Vorcaro.
On Tuesday, Flávio Bolsonaro arrived in Washington without a public agenda, attempting to shore up his weakening presidential bid after receiving about $12 million from disgraced banker Daniel Vorcaro.
Messages leaked May 13 by The Intercept revealed the senator received $12 million from Vorcaro, whose Banco Master defrauded customers of hundreds of millions; Brazil's federal police estimate total fraud at 12 billion reais .
Even Jair Bolsonaro supporter former Minas Gerais Gov. Romeu Zema said on Monday that "anyone getting close to a criminal banker gives a bad sign," while Sen. Marcos Rogerio insisted the candidacy remains standing.
Trump had already met with Bolsonaro's rival, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, for three hours on May 7, complicating the senator's Washington visit as Lula seeks a fourth nonconsecutive term in October's elections.
