2 indicted on firearm charges in connection with shooting outside Utah church
Two alleged Tongan Crip Gang members face federal firearm charges after a church shooting that killed two and injured several, linked by photos, videos, and ballistics evidence.
- A federal grand jury in Salt Lake City indicted Ryan Daniel Toutai and Fineeva Pomona Maka on firearms charges tied to a Jan. 7, 2026 shooting that left two dead and six injured.
- At the meetinghouse, authorities found the shooting erupted during a funeral involving Tongan congregants, following a dispute among attendees who knew each other.
- Investigators recovered a Ruger 9mm pistol,.40 caliber and 9mm casings, and seized Toutai's phone showing photos of the firearm's serial number and GPS data linking Maka to the weapon on January 7, 2026.
- They are scheduled to appear in court on March 3, 2026, and Toutai was previously arrested last month for obstruction of justice, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.
- No one has yet been charged in the uncharged homicides, a third arrested individual faces related charges, and the shooting at a church serving Tongan congregants heightens local community impact where more than 25% of the U.S. Tongan population resides in Utah.
