Black female WWII unit, ‘Six Triple Eight,’ to receive congressional honor
- The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only Black, all-female unit to serve in Europe during World War II, will receive the Congressional Gold Medal today following a campaign for recognition.
- The unit solved a mail crisis by clearing 17 million pieces of mail in three months, processing 65,000 pieces per shift, which was twice as fast as expected.
- Wisconsin Rep. Gwen Moore stated that the award is a long overdue honor and is important to recognize the accomplishments of the women who served in the unit.
- Only two of the original 855 members of the unit are still alive, highlighting the lengthy process of gaining recognition for their contributions.
