NDP’s Alexandre Boulerice to resign as MP, run provincially for Quebec Solidaire

Québec Solidaire changed its nomination rules to clear the way for Boulerice, who would leave the federal caucus with Quebec’s only NDP seat.

  • On Friday, sources confirmed that federal New Democratic Party MP Alexandre Boulerice will leave the House of Commons in Ottawa to run for the provincial party Québec Solidaire in the Montreal riding of Gouin.
  • To secure Boulerice's nomination for the "left-wing sovereigntist" party, QS adopted an exception to its rules last February, which previously mandated female or non-binary candidates in "currently won" ridings, co-spokesperson Ruba Ghazal announced.
  • Boulerice's departure leaves the federal NDP caucus with just five seats in the House of Commons, as he seeks to succeed MNA Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois, who announced his departure from provincial political life.
  • First elected during the 2011 "Orange Wave" under Jack Layton, Boulerice will officially announce his candidacy for the October provincial election on Monday, confirming the widely reported open secret.
  • Trading one progressive party for another, Boulerice joins a provincial group currently polling at or below 10 per cent, with poll aggregator Qc125 indicating the party could lose seats in the upcoming election.
