Alert Ready system to undergo public test across Canada
The Alert Ready system has issued 896 emergency alerts this year as part of efforts to ensure readiness for life-threatening situations, officials said.
- On Wednesday, Alert Ready will run a nationwide test broadcasting over television, radio and compatible LTE-connected wireless devices, with Ontario's test at 12:55 p.m. EST.
- Regular testing helps officials confirm Alert Ready operates as intended for life-threatening situations and was developed with federal, provincial and territorial governments, Pelmorex, and industry partners.
- Some wireless devices may require acknowledgment, and if not, the sound and vibration will continue for eight seconds; accessibility formats are available for people who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind or partially sighted, the Alert Ready website says.
- Recipients cannot opt out of the test and should not be alarmed if their phone rings loudly, as Alert Ready has issued nearly 900 emergency alerts this year.
- Ontario's high number of alerts this year highlights varied threats, with 230 alerts including 6 for civil emergencies, 6 thunderstorms, and 2 AMBER alerts, according to the Alert Ready website.
