Albuquerque Man Sentenced to 18 Years in Prison for Murdering His Friend

  • On Wednesday, 48-year-old Daniel Levy pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey to murdering Abdul Kaleem Shaik, 41, in Lambeth, south London.
  • Levy stabbed Shaik in his Vauxhall flat on New Year's Eve before surrendering at Bishopsgate Police Station on January 1, telling officers, "It's happened again."
  • Levy, who has schizophrenia, had previously been convicted of killing his grandmother in 2000 by stabbing and setting her on fire, and claimed he killed Shaik to help him because he was "very depressed."
  • Judge Lynn Tayton ruled Levy fit to enter his plea after he stated, "I don't want to go to trial," and remanded him into custody for sentencing on Wednesday, September 9.
  • Defence counsel asked whether Levy's characterization of his actions as "akin to assisted suicide" was rational, while prosecutors stated he had planned the killing for some time.
