Alberta introduces new flag rules and restrictions for all schools starting in 2027
The province says schools may display only approved flags, with other banners allowed on specific dates or by written request.
On Thursday, the Alberta government announced new rules limiting flags on school property, effective Jan. 4, 2027, restricting permanent displays to the Alberta and Canadian flags, Vatican City, and sports team banners.
Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides stated the limitations aim to "remove politics and ideology" from classrooms, arguing schools should avoid getting "embroiled into potentially divisive social or political issues."
Schools may display Franco-Albertan or First Nation flags during official occasions, while displays outside guidelines require written requests to the Ministry of Education and Childcare for case-by-case assessment.
Alberta NDP education shadow minister Amanda Chapman criticized the mandate, arguing the province should address overcrowded classrooms rather than "policing flags," noting conditions from last year's historic teacher strike persist.
The government previously delayed these rules amid backlash regarding free speech, while Alberta Teachers' Association president Jason Schilling described suggestions that schools lack integrity as "unfair and quite frankly, offensive to the profession.
